WAVY-TV 10 news anchor Don Roberts, who recently retired after more than three decades with the station, visited Telecom to be interviewed for a student-produced TV show.
For 33 years, Roberts co-anchored WAVY's morning show, "WAVY News 10 Today." The show is the top-rated morning newscast in Hampton Roads. He also co-anchored the mid-day newscast, "WAVY News 10 Midday."
Roberts retired in September.
Telecom TV-II student Fantasee Carey, a senior at Denbigh High School, secured Roberts as a guest for the show she is directing as part of her senior directing project. Students earn college credit in Directing for these projects.
Telecom TV Instructor Carl Daniels, Jr. knows Roberts from his time as a Video News Editor at WAVY before he joined Telecom. Daniels worked at WAVY for 14 years, editing Robert's segment, "Wednesday's Child," among others. "Wednesday's Child" featured children in the foster care system who were awaiting adoption and kids in need of adult mentors.
Roberts has visited Telecom in the past to speak to students about working in the TV news field.
Daniels conducted the interview as the on-air host, using the questions prepared by Carey.
The student show, called "Focus," is a news-magazine style show. It will air on NNPS-TV and will be available on demand on the student YouTube channel (youtube.com/nnpstelecom).
