The team at NNPS-TV has won three awards from the National School Public Relations Association, which honors individuals and school districts for media excellence.

According to the NSPRA website, the association "sponsors recognition awards to honor individuals and districts for their contributions and accomplishments related to school communication and public relations."

NNPS-TV entered two videos and one website article in the Publications & Digital Media category for school districts over 25,000 students.

The video production team, which is composed of Station Manager Jim Anklam, Producer Nik Long, and Production Specialist Aaron Moore, created the winning videos.

Both videos were from January 2026: School Board Spotlight and This Just In 831: January 26, 2026.

School Board Spotlight received an Award of Excellence for a singular video and This Just In earned an Award of Merit:.

The videos feature segments about NNPS accreditation, the Elementary Engineering Design Challenge, the NNPS state qualifying archery tournament, Warwick-CNU basketball games, Menchville's Mega On-Site College and Career Night, and the Hines Community Resource Fair and Breakfast.

Beth Scott, NNPS-TV's Media & TV Programming Coordinator, wrote and produced "The voice in the booth: NNPS-TV sports announcer Nate Milton," which earned an Award of Excellence in the "Excellence in Writing" category. The article details one of NNPS-TV's sports announcers' calling to broadcasting and the Telecom program's role in it.

Robert White, Executive Director of Public Information & Community Involvement for Newport News Public Schools, submitted the entries and announced the winners.

Station Manager Anklam credits Long and Moore's experience and expertise for their ability to tell "current and relevant stories about the opportunities and successes for students and staff."

"Their choices in cinematography and editing engage the viewer," he said, explaining that close-up perspectives of students solving problems, collaborating on designs, and caring for the community draw viewers in.

NNPS-TV has earned NSPRA awards in the past, and even has three Golden Achievement Awards, the highest honor, from 1990.

"Social media and streaming were not available back then," said Anklam, "so the only way to tell our stories via video was through our TV channel, over the Metronet [closed circuit TV connected to every school site], and at various meetings and gatherings."

"I created the videos as a foundation for communicating necessary stories and information regarding opportunities and resources in NNPS," Anklam said. "When I entered the videos, I explained why they were pivotal to informing the community."

Three decades later, the NNPS-TV team — which is now more than one person — is still delivering vital information to school families, staff, and the community, and earning awards for their work.
