NNPS-TV has added a number of awards to its collection over the past couple years, including Telly awards, AVA Digital awards, and Communicator awards, for their outstanding Newport News Public Schools-related videos.

Most recently, NNPS-TV's "School Board Spotlight: August 2023" earned the 2024 AVA Digital Gold Award, the second-highest award, in the category of video production for TV broadcast and cable. "School Board Spotlight" is played during the monthly School Board meeting, which airs live on NNPS-TV. It highlights school and division-wide initiatives and activities.

According to AVA Digital Awards, it is "an international competition that recognizes excellence by creative professionals responsible for the planning, concept, direction, design and production of digital communication."

In 2023, NNPS-TV garnered three Communicator awards. Three different videos earned the Award of Distinction: "This Just In #667: December 5, 2022," "School Board Spotlight: February 2023" and "Richneck Community Support." "This Just In #667" covered General Stanford, Greenwood, and Knollwood Meadows Celebrating Veterans Day; Sanford New Kids on the Block; and Johnson Purple Star School. "This Just In," is NNPS-TV's weekly news show.

Going back to 2022, the team earned a Bronze Telly award, for an episode of "This Just In." "This Just In #570: January 25, 2021," highlights Greenwood and Yates elementaries' "Bundle Up with Books," and Riverside Elementary's "Kindness Book Walk."

The Telly Awards, originally created in 1979 to honor commercials made for cable and local TV, has evolved over the years and has a new, updated mission statement: "Honoring excellence in video and television across all screens." NNPS-TV has earned nearly 20 of them since 2004.

Other 2022 awards include four Communicator awards: Two Awards of Excellence for "State of the Schools 2021" and "This Just In #570: January 25, 2021" and two Awards of Distinction for "NNPS Hybrid Learning" and "Virtual Learning Academy."

The NNPS-TV production team, which is made up of Station Manager and "This Just In" host Jim Anklam, Producer Nik Long, and Production Specialist Aaron Moore, created the award-winning videos.
