TV Production students at the Telecommunications Center are getting information and advice from some of the Hampton Roads area's finest news people. The students had three news professionals from WAVY-TV 10/WVBT-TV FOX 43 come speak to their classes the week of March 4-6.
Don Roberts, who co-anchors WAVY's morning and mid-day newscasts, was the first to visit, followed by Jim Gilchriest, who is the station's News Director. The third guest speaker was Nicole Livas, who anchors the 5, 6, 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts. Each speaker visited a different class: two classes of Television I students and one class of seniors (Television II students).
The Telecom students got to hear how these successful news professionals got started in the business, what sacrifices they had to make, and the kind of ambition it takes to get the job you want. They heard about news gathering and how to get viewers' attention, and once again how important it is to work as a team.
The talks were coordinated and facilitated by Telecom's TV Production Instructor Carl Daniels, Jr., who was a Video News Editor at WAVY-TV 10 for 14 years before joining Telecom. As an Adjunct Instructor in mass media (TV Production and TV Directing) at Norfolk State University, Daniels has had WAVY-TV 10 journalists visit his classes before.
The Telecom students were able to ask as many questions as they wanted and pose for photos with the speakers afterward.
