Newport News Public Schools TV and the Telecommunications Center

February 2011 marks the 200th episode of "Sports Highlights," our sports interview show hosted by Newport News native Greg Bicouvaris.  The show is produced monthly by Newport News Public Schools Television (NNPS-TV Cox 47/FiOS 17).

The February 1992 inaugural show featured Menchville High Tennis Coach Marvin Hedgepeth and the late Jackie Diggs, teacher and principal, as the first guests. Hedgepeth, along with Paul Cummings, who created the show, will be guests for the 200th episode. Cummings was the first executive producer of the show and oversaw the program from 1992 to 2004.

Ray Price, Instructional Supervisor for NNPS-TV, has been part of the show's production team since 1993, and is now the Executive Producer and Director.  Price has done camera work, editing, production, and direction at the studio and at innumerable remote locations.  Several NNPS-TV staff members and students have assisted with the production of the show over the years.

The program started out in a radio studio with just the two-man team of Cummings and Bicouvaris, but it expanded into a larger television studio in 1993.

"Sports Highlights" has had over 500 guests on the show, including such notable names as:  Mike London, Ronald Curry, Allen Iverson, Bruce Smith,  Jerry Stackhouse, Terry Holland , Lefty Driesell, Bobby Wilder, Frank Beamer, Serena Williams, former Newport News mayors Joe Frank and Barry DuVal, and former Virginia Beach mayor Meyera Oberndorf .

The show airs on Cox Cable Channel 47 in Newport News, Verizon FiOS 17 in Hampton Roads, and is webcast on www.nnpstv.com during the TV broadcast.  Showtimes are Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m., plus Mondays at 7 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m.
