NNPS-TV

Newport News Public Schools TV and the Telecommunications Center

Alexis Perkins

NNPS-TV and Alexis Perkins, a Telecommunications graduate, have teamed up to create a new exercise show called "Fuzion Fitness with Alexis."   The 30-minute, high-energy show features upbeat music and quick, fun dance steps akin to Latin-style moves.

The show was created by Perkins and Telecom Instructional Supervisor Ray Price, who had the fitness instructor as a guest on the September 2009 Sports Highlights monthly interview show hosted by Greg Bicouvaris.  Price had supervised Perkins when she was a Telecom student in the late '90s.  She and Price are co-producers, and Price serves as director as well.

Perkins graduated from Warwick High School in 2000, having spent two years in the TV Production classes at NNPS’s Telecommunications Center.  She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Norfolk State in 2005, majoring in Broadcast Journalism.  A huge proponent of health and fitness, Perkins teaches exercise classes at the Newport News YMCA and Onelife Fitness, which is located in the City Center area of Newport News.

But she hasn't quit her day job.  Perkins is a Digital Technician for WTKR NewsChannel 3, a busy and often stressful job that starts at 6 a.m.  Add to that a young son to care for, and you can see why Perkins swears by her calorie-burning, body-energizing exercise routine.

Joining her in the first episode of the show are two fellow dance-workout enthusiasts, Tara Moore and Brittany Spady.  Moore performs the steps in a "low-impact" fashion for viewers who need a lighter workout.  The trio does a 30-minute routine that includes stretching, aerobics, abdominal exercises on the floor, and then a cool-down.

The upbeat techno sound that drives the dancing/exercising of "Fuzion Fitness with Alexis" was created by Dandy Bush.  Making a local exercise show is challenging because mainstream music is off limits due to copyright laws.  Bush, who attended Warwick High School with Perkins, custom-fit the music for the fitness show.

The show is also a learning tool for Telecom’s TV Production students, who operate the cameras and edit the footage.

With the first edition of "Fuzion Fitness with Alexis" under the team's belt, future editions are sure to flow more easily.  The show airs on NNPS-TV Cox 47/FiOS 17 at 6:30 a.m. daily, plus Mondays at 7:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.   It can also be seen online via nnpstv.com's webstream at those times.  All shows are on demand on YouTube.

DVDs of each "Fuzion Fitness with Alexis" show will be available for $15 each. Call 591-4687 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information.
