Movin' on up: Telecom grads find success in media industry
Jennifer Serda
Jennifer Serda is a News Anchor at WTOC News.
Newport News Public Schools Telecommunications students like to be where the action is. When they graduate, they take their TV production skills to a variety of media outlets where the grads flourish in an ever-changing industry.

Instructional Supervisor Ray Price has been guiding students at NNPS-TV for 18 years, making him something of a "Father Abraham" of Telecom students.  His "innumerable progeny" often call or come by for a visit, and a few of them are fellow employees at NNPS-TV.

Currently, Price is working on a fitness show, which features Telecom graduate Alexis Perkins.  By day, Perkins is a Digital Technician at WTKR Channel 3 in Norfolk, but during off-hours she teaches fast-paced cardiovascular dance-workouts.  Fortunately, Perkins appears to be at home in front of the camera, too.

Other former students who are local assist with NNPS-TV broadcasts such as sporting events and recording the high school graduations in June.  Nate Milton is NNPS-TV's sports announcer: You'll hear him on both football and basketball broadcasts.

And Marcus Hickman, Telecom's new instructor, is a Telecom graduate, as are Michael Price and Reggie Crudup, who are the Communications instructors at Woodside High and Huntington Middle schools, respectively, which boast the Arts and Communications Magnet Program.

NNPS-TV Producer Nik Long, known for his "Teach Green" series, also graduated from the Telecom program.

Far-flung graduates include: Jennifer Serda, News Anchor at WTOC News in Savannah, Georgia; Farah "Cocoa" Brown, Comedienne / Producer / Actress with HBO/BET Comedy; and Steven Wilks, Production Assistant for Entertainment Tonight / The Insider in Los Angeles, California.

John Regan, an independent film director, directed a short called "The Flock," and currently is working on "Sherwood Horror," a Robin Hood-themed horror movie in which an ex-con battles the vampires that have taken over his hometown.

On a sad note, Lawrence Brown III, known as "Kool DJ Law" on WOWI-FM "103 JAMZ," died September 19 at the age of 40.  The popular and well-loved deejay was a Telecom student in the late '80s when radio production was also offered.
