camera operatorsCool weather, hot chocolate, holiday songs and fireworks at the fountain mean one thing:  Hollydazzle at City Center in Newport News.  And for Telecom students recording the event, the fun and excitement also means a long night working in the cold, in the dark, and amongst a large crowd.

The annual outdoor event, which was held Friday, December 3, brings with it a number of videotaping challenges, including coordinating with the city, setting up and testing equipment beforehand, shooting video outdoors at night with artificial light, and then editing the video after the event.  And with temperatures hovering just below 40 degrees that night, working the equipment with cold, numb fingers was an extra nuisance, but the students know that's just part of the job.

Telecom Instructional Supervisor Ray Price and Woodside Communications Instructor Michael Price were in charge of the project, and Lenny Marble of Telecom handled the sound.  In all, there were 15 students working that night: twelve from Telecom and three from Woodside High, the Arts and Communications magnet.

The students recorded four band and choral performances, and conducted interviews with Hollydazzle organizers, performers and even Dr. McKinley Price, the mayor of Newport News.  Some students worked in the remote video production truck, coordinating input from several different cameras and reporters, plus creating the graphics.

Performances recorded by NNPS-TV include:  Newsome Park Elementary's "Singing Navigators," Nelson Elementary's "Nelson Knightly Chorus," "Warwick High School Vocal" and Hines Middle School's Advanced Band.

The performances and other elements of the celebration were edited into an hour-long show, which airs on NNPS-TV (Cox channel 47 and Verizon FiOS channel 17) from December 20 through Jan. 2.  Viewers can see it online at nnpstv.com by watching the live webstream during the TV broadcast.

The production includes the highlight of the Hollydazzle celebration -- a spectacular fireworks display that shoots up, over, and across the oversized City Center fountain.
