Telecom SkillsUSA officers elected

SkillsUSA logoOne of the first orders of business when the Telecom students come back to school is to elect SkillsUSA officers for the new school year.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that brings together students, teachers and industry representatives with a common goal: ensuring our nation has a skilled work force. It provides educational programs, events, and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms.

Trinity Mitchell, She'Keliah Chapman, Teonja Tatum, Jason Hoyle, Darin Cooper, and Sharday Grimes are the new SkillsUSA officers.

For over 20 years, Telecom students have been participating in the SkillsUSA competitions and conferences. Telecom Supervisor Ray Price takes participating students to competitions at the district, state, or even national level. The students compete in a number of different categories, and are encouraged to try things other than TV production, too. Some of the categories they have competed in include "Live on Site" Video Production, Prepared Speech, Quiz Bowl, and Job Interview.

And Telecom students have not only competed at the state conference, they have also produced the event for DVD and streamed the awards ceremony on the Internet.

This year, the SkillsUSA officers are:

President – Darin Cooper
Vice President – Jason Hoyle
Secretary – Trinity Mitchell
Treasurer – Teonja Tatum
Reporter – She'Keliah Chapman
Parliamentarian – Sharday Grimes

One goal of the club is to raise money for expenses involved in attending and competing in the SkillsUSA conferences.
