For the fourth year in a row, Telecom students video-recorded the Christopher Newport University graduation ceremony. Commencement exercises were held at POMOCO Stadium Sunday, May 15 at 10 a.m., and though the weather looked threatening in the morning, the rain held off for the outdoor ceremony. Celebrated broadcast newsman Sam Donaldson was the commencement speaker.

Crew call was at 6:15 a.m. for the 13 students and three NNPS-TV staff members who worked the event. The students prepared for the chance of rain by outfitting the cameras with rain covers.
Camera operators set up in the stadium while the technical director and graphics, audio and other technicians worked with NNPS-TV Station Engineer Bryan Catlin in the remote video production truck.
During the ceremony, Telecom students manned five cameras to cover the various shots. Some students were positioned in the press box and another captured the procession of CNU students from the Freeman Center to the stadium. In keeping with tradition, CNU students receiving degrees tossed coins into the fountain as they passed.
Telecommunications Center Instructional Supervisor Ray Price served as producer/director, and Instructor Marcus Hickman was instructor/production assistant.
A number of CNU's Information Technology staff visited the remote production truck and was impressed with the equipment and the skills of the student crew.
The ceremony was streamed live on CNU's website, and a two-disc DVD was produced by Telecom and made available to CNU graduates to purchase.
