Telecom student Derick Miracle has won First Place in the 2019 Prefaces High School Juried Art Exhibition.

The show, at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, started May 4 and will run through May 26.

It features 60 works of art by area high school students.

The 60 pieces of art selected by the PFAC juror came from close to 300 submitted works from 14 schools.

According to Pat Franklin, who is NNPS's Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts and Past President of the National Art Education Association, it is an honor just to have artwork accepted into the juried show.

Miracle's piece is called "Sunset Arches" and is a digital photograph of the I.M. Pei-designed colonnade at the Ferguson Center for the Arts on the Christopher Newport University campus.

Miracle is a senior at Woodside High School and a second-year TV production student. He is a member of the remote crew that produces high school football, graduations, and other events throughout the year. He recently worked on "Every 15 Minutes" and was part of the team recording the CNU graduation.

For productions, Miracle most often serves as Technical Director.

Miracle was interviewed for the May edition of "Sports Highlights," which is recorded at the NNPS-TV studio. Telecom students serve as the crew for that show, too, and because they work behind the scenes producing football, basketball, and other sporting events for TV, one show each year highlights student crew-members.

Miracle is Vice President of Telecom's SkillsUSA club, which works to raise money for students to attend and compete in the SkillsUSA conferences. He competed as part of the Quiz Bowl team this year, which placed second in the district.
