Dutrow Elementary kindergarteners know they're small, but they know they still can make a big difference. And they also know that television is a good way to promote something.

So for their Kindergarten Action Project, the Dutrow students joined TerraCycle, a company that collects hard-to-recycle items and converts them into products and materials. The students also enlisted the help of the production team from NNPS-TV to produce a commercial about their project.
With the help of Lead Kindergarten Teacher Lori Kandel, the kids set out to collect Capri-Sun and Organic Kids juice pouches, zip-top bags, and empty glue stick containers. The company pays them two cents for each item. The students put collection bins around the school, and they pick them up each week and help sort the items for shipping.

The students appeared on the morning announcements show several times to advertise the program to the school. Nik Long, NNPS-TV Producer, was there to record them during one of the shows.
Kandel and the other kindergarten teachers wrote the script for the commercial. Long and Video Production Technician Aaron Moore went back to Dutrow for more footage and to record the students reading the script for the voiceover. Long helped them with inflection, pacing, and pronunciation, and said he was impressed that such very young students were talented readers. Four kindergarten classes participated in making the commercial.
Moore edited the video to create the finished product, which plays on NNPS-TV (Cox channel 47/FiOS channel 17) and was included in the June 20 episode of "This Just In," a weekly news show about Newport News Public Schools activities.
The school plans to make DVDs of the commercial to send to other schools to motivate them to take action for the environment.
