NNPS-TV has won a 2011 Communitas Award for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility for its "green" initiative "Teach Green." Communitas Awards recognize exceptional individuals, businesses and organizations who give of themselves to better their communities.

Station Manager Jim Anklam nominated the "green team" of Nik Long and Aaron Moore for their efforts to increase environmental awareness that go above and beyond their job descriptions. TV Producer Long and Video Production Technician Moore create, write, shoot and produce the "Teach Green" series for NNPS-TV (Cox channel 47/FiOS channel 17). On top of that, they make presentations to students at various schools, including preschoolers at the early childhood centers, to educate the children about recycling, eco-friendly school supplies and products, gardening, and composting.
A favorite presentation among the kids is when Long teaches them about composting with earthworms -- and brings with him a bin of wriggling worms for them to observe and touch. They learn how the worms devour scraps of food and paper to make soil, and also how to make their own composting bins.
Long also created a Facebook page for Teach Green (http://www.facebook.com/TeachGreen), and he updates it often with conservation tips, healthy recipes, gardening ideas, and crafts to make with items that are usually discarded.
Because of Long and Moore's efforts creating this television program and spending extra time in the schools and online, the Communitas Award judges found that NNPS-TV exhibits the spirit of "communitas," which is a Latin word that means people coming together for the good of the community. NNPS-TV was recognized in the "Green Initiatives" category.
About the Award
The Communitas Awards is an international effort to recognize the spirit of communitas: people helping people. Communitas winners unselfishly give of themselves and their resources, and are changing the way they do business to benefit their communities. Communitas winners are recognized for specific programs involving volunteerism, philanthropy, or ethical, sustainable business practices.
The Communitas Awards is an outgrowth of the pro bono recognition program of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). Founded in 1995, AMCP fosters and supports the efforts of its members who contribute their unique marketing and communication talents to public service and charitable organizations. Over the past three years, AMCP has given over $60,000 to help create marketing materials for homeless shelters, orphanages, day camps, community theaters and art centers; and for educational endeavors for children, the elderly and underprivileged. |
